The Ladder Proof Tights That Won’t Snag
The colder months mean you may be reaching for a pair of tights to keep your legs warm, however, we always encounter the same problem, don’t we? The dreaded ladder. As children and teenagers you get told off by teachers and parents for accidentally ripping holes in your tights and, as an adult, it’s just a bit of a hassle. Sure, laddered tights can really add to an outfit, if the said outfit is grungy or punk-inspired, but it just doesn’t look good with a black turtleneck and a simple mini skirt. So, to prevent the situation we step our toes into our tights with delicate precision in case a toenail gets caught, we pull them up gently so they don’t tear with our hands and we walk around all day wary of any sharp or particularly woody corners. Quite, frankly, who can be arsed with all of that?
Thankfully, the year is 2022 and technology is continually developing in the fashion industry and thus we have been blessed with the most marvellous of inventions…the ladder-proof tight. Sheertex calls themselves ‘The world’s toughest tights’, and that does seem to be the case. Back in 2017, Sheertex founder Katherine Homuth was, like many of us, fed up with ripping hosiery and wanted to see if she could solve the problem. And, she did! Sheertex states that their tights are created from a proprietary material containing fibres traditionally used in mountain climbing equipment, and honestly, I’m not a scientist but everyone that tries them says they would be able to stay intact with mountain climbing.
At first sight, you may be turned off by the brand with their prices, with the classic sheer tights retailing for an eye-watering £62. However, when you factor in that you’d only need to replace these tights if they somehow stain or you change size…it’s quite a good deal.
Don’t have 60 quid laying around at the moment ready to be spent on a single pair of tights? You don’t have to miss out. In fact, many household names have begun selling their own ladder-proof garments. For just £5 you can get a 5-pack of 15 denier ‘ladder resist matt tights’ from Marks & Spencers, even Boots have their own ‘ladder resist tights’ for £7. Whether these are just as strong as their Sheertex counterparts is hard to tell (and I haven’t tried them against each other), but if you do find yourself shouting at the holes in your tights I think it’s time you invest in some stronger pieces!
