How Royal Guests Honoured The Queen With Their Fashion At Her Funeral

Yesterday we saw one of the most significant events in Royal history, with members of international royal families joining members of the British royal family to mourn the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. The entire day was a breathtaking spectacle from Westminster Abbey to St George’s Chapel in Windsor. It is no surprise that everyone dressed appropriately for the solemn occasion with many attendees choosing to honour the late Queen via their clothing choices.

The Princess of Wales looked like the image of a future Queen of England, wearing a double-breasted Alexander McQueen coat dress. While this is the first time we have seen this dress in black, she wore the white version earlier this year at Trooping the Colour during the Queen’s platinum jubilee celebrations. While this was most likely completely unintentional, the connection is heartbreaking. Princess Kate accessorised her look with a pair of pearl and diamond earrings and a four-row pearl choker necklace that belonged to the Queen, the same pieces of jewellery she wore for the funeral of Prince Phillip.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, had an extremely close relationship with her late mother-in-law, often being considered a second daughter. To pay tribute to the woman she so greatly loved, Sophie wore a bespoke Suzannah London dress which was embroidered with lily of the valley, one of the Queen’s favourite flowers.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, wore a black cape dress designed by Stella McCartney, having previously worn the dress in blue at the celebration of the Queen’s birthday at the Royal Albert Hall in 2018. She accessorised with diamond drop earrings which were a gift from the late monarch.

While it would be much harder for the 7-year-old Princess Charlotte of Wales to create nods to her late great-grandmother through her clothing, the small horseshoe brooch that she wore was a subtle moment of honour. It is believed the Queen gifted the brooch to Charlotte.

Queen Rania of Jordan wore a very special coat dress to Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral - the same coat dress she wore back in 2001 while on a state visit to the UK where she was photographed with Her Majesty.
