Gigi Hadid's New Fashion Label Guest in Residence
Gigi Hadid’s brand new solo fashion label, Guest in Residence, officially launched in the US today. The supermodel now turned creative director and founder has created an ‘all-things-cozy’ knitwear label with cashmere at the forefront.
Autumn is very much on the horizon, or already here in aesthetic for most of social media even if temperatures are still sitting around 20 degrees, and that can only mean one thing: knitwear. While many associate Hadid with swimwear and runways, knitwear feels like the right venture for the 27-year-old. “I’m always the person who’s cold even when other people feel hot,” Hadid tells Vogue in a new interview. Moving to New York City for school as a teenager, the dip in temperature during the winter was a shock to the Californian-raised model, and so she turned to cashmere (A fibre obtained from cashmere goats, pashmina goats, and some other breeds of goat. It has been used to make yarn, textiles and clothing for hundreds of years.)
Guest in Residence begins its life with a series of sweaters, sweatpants, socks, tops and shorts, pretty much everything you could imagine in terms of comforting knitwear. The debut collection is bright and vibrant, although it doesn’t overwhelm, with warm tones that led themselves naturally during the cooler months.
It was inevitable that Hadid would, at some point, create her own brand. It’s the expected natural progression for a highly coveted model who has experience working on collaborations with Tommy Hilfiger and Frankies Bikinis. As with many emerging fashion brands and companies, Hadid began working on her new business pursuit during the Covid-19 lockdowns. She has also decided to try and keep the brand as sustainable as possible, a very positive aspect. “I want clothes that feel sustainable and realistic to have for a long time,” she says. “If you look after cashmere correctly, it can last for decades.” The cashmere is being sourced in Inner Mongolia and is biodegradable. In an Instagram post, Guest in Residence said “Guest In Residence is designed with time in mind, to create future heirlooms made to last. The pieces in our inaugural collection are constructed with integrity and intention to represent lives well lived for future generations.”
