Anna Wintour Breaks Her Own Biggest Fashion Rule
Oh, fashion rules. If there’s one person that you expect to have some strict guidelines around what she, and those in her life and business, should be expected to wear then that person is, of course, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. The fashion mogul is known for her adoration of large floral prints, chunky necklaces and her frankly iconic black sunglasses but there is one style she would ever be seen dead in…all black. Well, that was until last night.
In an interview dating to 2019, Wintour had said with much confidence, "Don't wear all black," she continued, "It seems too gloomy as if one's going to a funeral." It would seem that the Chanel 1983 couture piece designed by Karl Lagerfeld that she wore last night to the state dinner in honour of the French President at the White House doesn’t count. Although, it may be clear why this particular look evades her own set of rules.
Anna is known for her large and illustrious collection of jewellery, favouring chunky pieces over small and delicate ones. And it just so happens that this Chanel piece is absolutely smothered in the things! Embellished around the wrists, neckline and waistline, this gown certainly doesn’t feel like the sort of ‘gloomy’ or ‘boring’ all-black piece Wintour would usually cast aside. Wintour also seems to be beginning her promotion of the upcoming Met Gala, just five months away, with her choice of dress. 2023’s Met Gala theme will honour the late Karl Lagerfeld, most known for his work at Chanel, including this exact dress worn by Wintour yesterday evening.
While Anna Wintour was breaking her fashion rules, Dr Jill Biden also went for black in a custom lace Oscar de la Renta dress while First Lady Brigitte Macron opted for bright white, designed by Louis Vuitton.
