Why The Brooch Worn by The Queen to Meet Biden Was Symbolic
Queen Elizabeth has now met with 13 Presidents of the United States in her almost 70 years on the throne, an achievement reached by no other monarch in history. So, it made complete sense that while the new President Biden was in the UK to take part in the G7 summit in Cornwall that the Queen would hold him and his wife Dr Jill Biden at Windsor Castle for afternoon tea last weekend, a privilege offered to many foreign dignitaries.
Her Majesty looked lively and fresh in a pink floral dress paired with a matching hat, white gloves and her signature black Launer bag that is forever at her side. As she often chooses to do, she accessorised with delicate pearl earrings and matching three strand pearl necklace, but the standout piece was her choice of brooch.
Members of the Royal family are often spotted wearing brooches, an accessory that has somewhat gone out of style, but they remain a favourite, especially with Her Majesty, perhaps because of the rich jewels they can be made from.
For her meeting with President Biden and the FLOTUS the Queen chose to wear the Jardin Star Brooch which she has worn on many occasions in the past including her christmas speeches and her diamond jubilee celebrations. It is said she chose this brooch as a subtle nod to the American Star-Spangled Banner. A warm gesture indeed, very different to the messages she sent Trump via her brooch choices.
In her role as monarch the Queen, and in turn all senior members of the Royal family, must be a-political. However, this doesn’t mean they don’t sometimes subtly show where their personal alliances lie. It would be impossible not to!
After almost 70 years in her job, the Queen has mastered the intricate craft of sending subtle messages via her clothing choices. While many people will never notice what the Queen wears, looking at the clothing choices of the Duchess of Cambridge is frankly more exciting, perhaps we should all pay closer attention.
When the Queen hosted the Trumps at Windsor Castle in 2019 most eyes were on Trump and what he would inevitably do wrong, meanwhile the Queen just casually decided to wear a brooch gifted to her by the Obamas. Yeah, she really did that.
It’s said that the Queen developed quite a close bond with the Obamas during their time in office and so this was a real middle finger moment to Trump. But it didn’t stop there. Oh no, on the second day of their visit Her Majesty decided to wear a brooch gifted to her by Canada, a member country of the Commonwealth and a country that was never exactly Trump’s best mate. For the last day of their visit she chose to wear a brooch that her mother, the Queen mother, wore to the funeral of King George VI, so not a brooch that has overly great memories attached to it. It all says quite a lot doesn’t it.
When compared with the brooch she chose for Biden’s visit then...the Queen knows how to throw some serious shade.
