Where You Can Buy Princess Diana’s Famous Sweaters

We can all agree Princess Diana was a fashion icon, an innovator and leader of a myriad of fashion trends during the 80s and 90s and even today she retains a hold on many peoples styles. During the current renaissance of 90s fashion currently occurring and the last season of The Crown, a whole new generation has discovered her distinct style with countless amounts seeking to replicate her look, be that her famous short hair, use of blazers or her biker shorts (she was ahead of her time.)

From the moment the press caught wind of the young Lady Diana Spencer in the early 1980s, her adoration of a good patterned sweater or cardigan was obvious. We can’t blame her, a good grandma sweater is really quite comfortable! While a plain sweater is a versatile, useful item of clothing a patterned sweater can really show one’s personality, and Diana knew this, wearing sweaters that often gave very obvious messages to the media. Are you on the hunt for a replica? Here are some that you can get for yourself!

Perhaps the most famous sweaters ever worn by the late Princess of Wales is the black sheep jumper, a red knit sweater adorned with white sheep while one, lone black sheep sits front and centre. It is not rocket science to understand the message Diana was aiming to send when she chose to wear this piece to a polo match just a month before her nuptials to Prince Charles. The original sweater was designed by Joanna Osborne and Sally Muir and now sits in the V&A’s permanent collection.

Many knock offs have been made, but you can now buy a version made in collaboration with the original designers from Rowing Blazers

This isn’t the only Diana replica sweater that Rowing Blazers sells however, they also stock the equally as famous ‘I’m a Luxury’ knit. The meaning of this sweater is clear to anyone who reads it, especially when you learn that the back of the jumper reads ‘Few Can Afford’. Again, in order to create a piece as authentic to the original as possible, Rowing Blazers worked with former member of parliament Gyles Brandreth who created the original design, making it available for the first time since the 90s. “She has become a forever icon,” says Brandreth. “But the look of hers that I always found irresistible was her casual look—unfussy, fun, colourful.”

Both sweaters retail for £270, a reasonable price considering their inspiration and being handmade in 100% wool fabric.

While these are the only ‘official’ replica sweaters on the market, of course, you can purchase many other versions of sweaters worn by Diana through the years, mainly via Etsy. During the 90s, a regular favourite of the Princess was a rather simple oversized ‘USA’ sweater. You can find a replica available for purchase here.

Another iconic sweater worn by Diana during the 1990s is the jumper known as ‘Fly Virgin Atlantic’, which was a gift from Sir Richard Branson, the owner and founder of Virgin. In 2019, the original piece sold at auction for a whopping £42,700. Don’t worry, you don’t need to pay that much for your own version! Instead, you can get your own for £25.99 here.
