The Self-Portrait Dress Royal Women Are Obsessed With

Every now and then there is one item of clothing that Royal women from around the world will, for whatever reason, fall head over heels in love with whether that be a particular pair of heels (the Romy from Jimmy Choo is notable) or a specific millinery brand. With many of the Royal houses having some guidelines on appropriate clothing for different events, it can come as no surprise when they end up wearing the same or very similar ensembles, however, there is one dress that seems to have captured the hearts of several Royal women this year.

Way back when in September of 2021, Catherine, Princess of Wales, hosted an event at Buckingham Palace. The official photographs released from the event show the then Duchess of Cambridge wearing Self-Portrait’s ‘white tailored crepe and chiffon midi dress’ which retails for £400. The wrap dress which resembles a blazer is fitted at the waist and falls to a pleated midi skirt with lace detailing. In early June of this year, Catherine wore the dress once more for the Platinum Party outside Buckingham Palace to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee. She wore her hair in a deep, elegant side-parting and kept her jewellery simple, allowing the dress to shine.

Four weeks later Princess Beatrice was spotted at an event wearing the same chic dress in the white colourway. The next time Beatrice wore this dress however was in the black colourway on the 17th of September during a silent vigil held in Westminster Hall just days after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. The black version of the now well-known white Self-Portrait piece is designed and cut identically.

Fast forward to this week and we have seen this dress twice! On Thursday the 10th of November, Princess Madeleine of Sweden attended a charity dinner in Sao Paulo, and what was she wearing? The Self-Portrait dress. However, this time the dress did not feature full-length sleeves, instead with no sleeves. This version isn’t available on the Self-Portrait website so looks to be a custom design. Now, back to Catherine. On Saturday the 12th of November she wore the dress again, but like Beatrice during mourning for the late Queen, she also wore it in the black colourway due to being at a Remembrance service. She accessorised the look with the four-row pearl choker necklace which she wore at the funerals of both the late Queen and Prince Phillip.

So, this dress is rather popular! But, this isn’t the first time a Self-Portrait dress has had this much Royal attention. Introducing the ‘pleated crochet floral maxi dress’ which retails for £360. Catherine wore the gown back in November 2016 to the premiere of A Street Cat Named Bob. In addition to Catherine, the piece has also been worn by Princess Sofia of Sweden and Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway (oh, and Paris Hilton and Jennifer Morrison.)
