The 8 Glamourous Wedding Looks of Elizabeth Taylor
They say you should take great care when planning a wedding because you’ll only do it once, or maybe twice in some people’s case. Old Hollywood giant Elizabeth Taylor however was practically an actress turned wedding planner, with 8 under her belt. Starting in 1950 at the tender age of 18 and ending in 1991 aged 51, Taylor had 8 weddings to 7 different men (she married Richard Burton twice.)
Oftentimes when a person remarries they tone down the wedding, after all, they’ve done the whole rigmarole before, but ‘Elizabeth Taylor’ and ‘tone down’ are not exactly phrases ever used together. Each and every affair was as glamourous as the previous, with the blushing bride in her beautiful outfit topped with stunning jewellery.
As the Summer wedding season draws to a close, let’s take a look at the 8 wedding looks of Elizabeth Taylor in all their glory!
1. 1950. Conrad Hilton.
For her first wedding, and the only time she ever wore a ‘traditional’ wedding gown, Taylor wore a dress designed by Helen Rose. Helen Rose, who also designed Grace Kelly’s wedding gown, took inspiration from the dress worn by Taylor onscreen in The Father of The Bride. It was auctioned in 2013 for £122,000.
2. 1952. Michael Wilding.
On February 21st 1952, Elizabeth Taylor married Michael Wilding at Claridge’s in London. Opting out of a traditional dress, as is custom for second weddings, Taylor wore a dress designed by Helen Rose once again. The look, while elegant and sophisticated, was subtly romantic.
3. 1957. Michael Todd.
In 1957 it was marriage number three for Taylor, on this occasion choosing to wear a white silk-chiffon gown with hood mimicking a veil. The star of her look however was her massive 29.4-carat diamond emerald-cut engagement ring! Elizabeth’s future husband, Eddie Fisher, was in attendance as the husband of Taylor’s bridesmaid Debbie Reynolds…messy.
4. 1959. Eddie Fisher.
In 1959, after converting to Judaism for the nuptials, Taylor married Eddie Fisher at Temple Beth Shalom in Las Vegas. Again wearing a chiffon hooded dress, this time in a green shade, that nipped in at the waist and fell into a full skirt. This is one of Taylor’s more famous wedding looks.
5. 1964. Richard Burton.
In 1964, Elizabeth Taylor wed Richard Burton for the first time in Montreal after the pair met on the set of Cleopatra. It was the swinging 60s and Taylor chose a fun and vivacious look, wearing a knee-length, yellow empire-waisted dress designed by Irene Sharaff. She wore flowers in her hair.
6. 1975. Richard Burton.
In Botswana in 1975, Liz and Dick married for a second time. For this occasion Taylor wore a very 1970s gown by the British designer Gina Fratini and wore her hair up in a relaxed manner.
7. 1976. Senator John Warner.
For her 7th wedding in 26 years, Elizabeth was far more lowkey about the whole thing. She married Senator John Warner on Warner’s estate in Virginia whilst wearing a cashmere coat, with gloves. She chose to keep her hair covered.
8. 1991. Larry Fortensky.
In 1991, for what would be her final marriage, Elizabeth Taylor opted for glamour and opulence once more. She married Larry Fortensky on Michael Jackson’s Neverland ranch amongst a whole host of famous faces. The bride wore a bespoke Valentino gown adorned with lace and flower detailing. Taylor sold the picture rights for this wedding to People for $1million, using the money to set up the Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation.
