The 10 Fashion Pieces That Defined 2022

While it may already be 2023, we take one last chance to look back on 2022 and all the marvellous fashion moments it produced…

The Miu Miu Mini Skirt

Miu Miu’s ultra-tiny pleated mini skirt went viral this year, after its debut in the brand’s SS22 collection.  The micro-mini manifests in different shades, including khaki and grey, and plays on the pleats of conservative school uniforms with a low rise, short-as-possible silhouette.  The skirt has graced the glossy covers of many magazines, including Vanity Fair, Muse, Vogue Korea and Elle Korea, and has been worn by a star-studded list of celebrities.  The piece is not without controversy though: Miu Miu was criticised for lacking inclusive sizing after a larger skirt had to be custom-made for Paloma Elsesser, who wears it on the cover of i-D.

Anything Barbie Pink

Earlier this year the first stills of Margot Robbie as Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s much-awaited film were released, sparking the classic obsession with bright, Barbie pink fashion.  This emergence of pink coincided with Valentino’s stunning AW22-23 Pink Collection by Pierpaolo Piccioli.  The collection’s monochromatic hot pink looks have toured the red carpets through the year, worn by Anne Hathaway, Vanessa Hudgens, Ariana Grande, Zendaya, and Jenna Ortega, to name a few.  The first trailer for Barbie also dropped this week and judging by the excitement it has received, it looks like Barbie pink will be here to stay next year.

The JW Anderson Pigeon Bag

A pigeon might have been the last thing we’d have expected to become glamorous in 2022, but JW Anderson’s $890 pigeon clutch became so popular that it sold out instantly.  Shaped like a life-sized pigeon, and startlingly realistic, this bag is certain to turn heads for its originality.  Sarah Jessica Parker was spotted carrying the clutch in October while filming And Just Like That in New York, accelerating the accessory to It-bag status.

All of Wednesday Addams’ Wardrobe

She may have arrived late in the year, but it only took a matter of hours for Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday Addams, the eponymous star of new Netflix series, Wednesday, to win the world’s attention.  Famed for her monochromatic, almost all black outfits, Wednesday has sparked a renaissance of gothic fashion, which will surely continue into the trends of 2023.

Florence Pugh’s Purple Valentino Co-ord

The internet was sent into a frenzy when Florence Pugh arrived in Venice in September for the city’s Film Festival wearing a stunning all-purple Valentino set.  Although her glittering sheer red carpet evening gown was enchanting, it was her glam co-ord that gained instant iconic status online and is sure to be remembered for years to come as a standout moment amidst the drama that surrounded Don’t Worry Darling.  Pugh’s purple outfit went so viral that one of her friends even recreated the look for Halloween.

The Miu Miu Ballet Flat

It’s only fair that Miu Miu features twice on this list, as the brand further defined 2022’s fashion through their iconic ballet flat, which appeared in the autumn/winter runway collection.  Ultra feminine, silky, dainty, and sweet in its simplicity, the Miu Miu ballet flat accelerated the internet’s obsession with balletcore this year.  The shoe has been styled with just about everything, proving more versatile than it might first appear, and also comes in a range of colours, from ballerina pink to angelic white.

The Diesel Belt Skirt

Another micro piece has woven its way onto the list, leaving no doubt that 2022 was the year of the ultra-mini skirt.  The Diesel belt skirt also achieved cult status this year, throwing a modern spin onto the Y2K mini with a dramatic leather wraparound skirt that fastens with Velcro, emblazoned with Diesel’s logo and available in black, red and chocolate brown.  Like the Miu Miu mini, the belt skirt also divided the internet because of its extremely short length, leading to debates over functionality in fashion.

Blake Lively’s Met Gala Gown

The Met Gala had to appear somewhere on this list, and whilst a mention should go to Kim Kardashian’s Marilyn Monroe dress, which undoubtedly sparked discourse online, it was Blake Lively’s gown that defined everything the Met Gala should mean.  Designed by Atelier Versace and inspired by the city of New York, the dress made Met Gala history when it transformed before our eyes on the red carpet.

Loewe’s Balloons

Loewe’s AW22 collection, designed by Jonathan Anderson, stood out for its fun, surrealist and experimental balloon motif, conjuring the same bold playfulness that Loewe’s iconic SS22 cracked egg heels symbolised.  Particularly memorable were the balloon heels, pumps, and boots, as well as the balloon bra.  Emma Corrin brought the motif to the red carpet at the Olivier Awards in April, wearing a nude-coloured dress with a printed balloon pattern, complete with the balloon bra on top and the black balloon boots.

Bella Hadid’s Spray-On Dress

Spectacularly, Coperni ended their SS23 show at Paris Fashion Week this year by spraying a dress onto model Bella Hadid using a liquid fibre created by tech company Fabrican.  Hadid entered the room wearing only flesh-coloured underwear and stood for 15 minutes while a dress materialised onto her body, created by a team of spray painters, who proceeded to cut a slit into the dress, drape the straps and shorten the length to complete the look.
