Mugler Announces Runway Comeback

After several years away, Mugler is coming back to the runway.

When the Covid-19 pandemic took hold of the entire globe, fashion brands scrambled to find ways to continue showing their collections. Extravagant runway shows with hundreds of guests, journalists, models and photographers were, quite obviously, off-limits. Many brands decided to photograph their collections and just release those, and some looked for more experiential solutions.

Fashion giant Mugler’s last runway show was for their Fall 2020 collection and since then the brand has done its best not only to stay relevant but to stay innovative. During the various lockdowns that shut down fashion weeks, creative director Casey Cadwallader used video and celebrity to bring three expertly created films to showcase his marvellous and instantly recognisable designs. With the likes of Meghan Thee Stallion, Hunter Schafer and Shalom Harlow featuring, the films were a mighty success with the device of film offering an exciting, and often unexplored tool, for wider audience consumption. With Mugler’s films it didn’t matter if you were an editor for Vogue or a teenager with a dream to one day design, everyone experienced the collection in the exact same way. The films united us all.

Today it was announced that after these three spectacular films, Mugler is making its runway comeback at the tail end of the upcoming couture fashion week on January 26th. “It’s not a classical return to the runway”, said managing director of Mugler Pascal Conte-Jodra to WWD. After all, how could you simply return back to the old recipe when you’ve just discovered something new? And in the wake of Thierry Mugler’s unfortunate passing in 2022, they were never going to come back with a splash. In fact, the show will take place a mere three days after the one-year anniversary of their founder’s passing. Conte-Jodra also suggested to WWD that this runway event will be “a completely different scale from what we’ve done in the past”. Keeping the large-scale shows of Thierry Mugler in mind, this show promises to be a treat.

It also promises to continue unifying the world’s fashion enthusiasts. The new show will be an “immersive experience across all channels, and in front of a live audience”. Only time will tell what they mean by this!
