Lizzo At The VMA’S, “It was couture, baby”

Lizzo has proven in the last few years that she knows how to have a fashion moment and get the internet talking. After the 2022 VMA’S on Sunday, when the world isn’t talking about Taylor Swift, her Oscar de la Renta look and brand new album, the name on everybody's lips is Lizzo.

Dominating the rather bland red carpet, Lizzo stunned in a strapless silk gown from the Spring 2022 Jean Paul Gaultier by Glenn Martens couture collection. Social media users have been quick to label the look a garbage bag and a shapeless void, but Lizzo’s stylist Brett Alan Nelson told the Hollywood Reporter,  “It was a major risk, because both Lizzo and I knew, with the trolls of the internet, the look could be judged in a bad light. But neither of us cared, because it was couture, baby, off the runway. I live for the absurdity of fashion, and that is what we gave: grunge and a bit of rock ‘n’ roll, but glam, glam, glam.” The look was topped off with Jennifer Fisher earrings, tulle gloves and a dark bold lip.

This would not, however, be Lizzo’s only couture look for the night. In fact, it was only the first! To accept her award for best video for good (mazel tov) she changed into another Jean Paul Gaultier creation, this time from the latest Fall 2022 couture collection designed by Olivier Rousteing. The look stuck with the moody glam vibe that had been commenced on the black red carpet earlier in the night. Nelson explained that the overall mood for the evening was about  “entering a glam/goth world for the evening — but still giving fashion and still giving fun.”

If there is one thing the VMA’S is known for, apart from the little moon man, is daring fashion moments. Somewhat like the Grammy’s, but oftentimes a bit more outlandish. The VMA’S are the home of Lady Gaga’s infamous meat dress, Rose McGowan's original naked dress in 1998 and Lil Kim’s daring one-shoulder jumpsuit with matching nipple pasties. All of this meant that Sunday was the perfect environment for Miss Lizzo to take a fashion risk, and while some may not like it, one thing is for sure, as Nelson himself said “It was couture, baby.”
