How To Get The Outlander Look This Winter

Outlander has had a hold on its viewers since 2014 not just for its captivating storytelling and Jamie Fraser but also for its excellent costume design. Costume designer Terry Dresbach carried the costumes of the show for the first four seasons, helping pave the way for an obsession with the aesthetic of the Scottish Highlands. In its five seasons thus far, we have followed the protagonist Claire Fraser on numerous journeys physical, mental and time-based. A show that covers the 1940s, 1960s, as well as the 1740s and 1760s, will automatically require some pretty clever costume design and overall Outlander has rarely put a foot wrong. Outlander has a beloved fan base, one that will support everything and embrace every new season, character and story arc. This fan base, as well as general onlookers, have also found themselves drawn to the aesthetic of Claire’s clothing in season one - a love of 18th-century inspired, tartan based outfits has been born!

Gloves and Shawls and Scarves

Scotland can be cold at the best of times and the 18th century was no different! Clothes were designed to be layered to keep you warm and gloves, shawls and scarves were a must, especially when outdoors riding horses.

It wouldn’t be a conversation about Outlander without some good old fashioned tartan now, would it! Obviously, tartan and plaid are worn a lot during season one and season two of Outlander and form the basis for many of the costumes. You can incorporate tartan into your closet in a myriad of forms.

Throughout all seasons of Outlander, Claire can often be spotted using fabric wrapped around her shoulders to keep her warm. This may not be the most practical in day to day modern life, but there are coats that give off this cosy and inviting aura.
