How To Dress Like Your Inner Wednesday Addams

Ask anyone you meet and they’ve probably watched some variation of the Addams family, be that the 1977 movie or the iconic 1993 film. Netflix has bought us a new iteration of this beloved gothic family with their new series Wednesday. As the name would suggest, this new television series focuses on the family's teenage daughter Wednesday, well-known for her slick black pigtails and characteristic black wardrobe. To say the series has been a success would be an understatement with the show becoming Netflix’s third most-watched English show in a mere two weeks, thanks, partly, to the deliciously devilish costume design of the title character.

TikTok is always where trends congregate, and if you’ve scrolled on your FYP for even five minutes in the last week you’ll be bombarded with videos of people dressing up as Wednesday Addams and dancing to Bloody Mary by Lady Gaga (the song isn’t actually in the show, yet has become Wednesday’s theme online.) It is safe to say that Wednesday’s fashion sense, worn so perfectly by Jenna Ortega, has become quite the trend to end the year with many seeking to replicate her fashion choices. Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, costume designer Colleen Atwood (who has also worked on the likes of Dumbo and Alice Through The Looking Glass) said that the costume design process of Wednesday all began with the little black dress, “We made the collar a little more pointed, but the idea was to do an homage everyone would be familiar with.”

Of course, black is the main colour (if not really only one) in Wednesday’s wardrobe, but the costume team had to find a way to make her looks not feel too repetitive and dull, “There’s almost no solid black that’s used. If a character is in a black jacket, for instance, I pair it with a white shirt underneath so you can see the sleeve peek out at the cuff, so it’s not just a blob of black on the screen.”

Given that it is Winter and frankly freezing, the release of the series couldn’t have been better timed as we all attempt to adjust our closets and go-to outfits for the colder, and gloomier, weather. In light of that, here are some items you could add to your wardrobe this season to channel your inner Addams!
